|
Open source software is software which has been licensed such that its source code is freely available to anyone interested in looking. Anyone can debate it, change it or distribute it as long as access to its source adheres to the Open Source Definition.
The Open Source Lab (OSL) at the University of St Thomas provides information and assistance regarding open source software. The OSL is located on the University of St. Thomas South Campus in the O'Shaughnessy Science Center room 429 (OSS 429), and is staffed by members of the Computer Science Club. Feel free to stop on by! For more information contact the Computer Science Club officers at ust.csclub@gmail.com.
Lab Projects:
Linux Terminal Server Project: We've got an operational demo of a Linux terminal server running in the OSL. It's there for anyone to use, learn from, and hopefully it will be brought into the south campus labs a little more in the future.
Lab Services:
Host a copy of the Linux Kernel: We host a copy of the Linux kernel for use by our club members and the QMCS department. Check it out to learn how the guts of the Linux kernel work with the hardware of your computer :)
Open Source Software at UST: We have stared a documentation project to help streamline students' use of open source software at UST. This section will grow into a documentation base for users to learn how to streamline the use of popular open source software with the services that are offered here at UST.
About the logos:
The logo combines Tux the penguin, the Linux mascot, with the Gnu from the GNU project. GNU software running on the Linux kernel powers Linux distributions.
